If you’ve just plugged something in and nothing happened, you’re not alone. We get service calls across Flower Mound, Frisco, Plano, and other DFW suburbs every week for outlets that suddenly stop working.
Sometimes it’s a simple fix — other times, it’s a sign of a deeper electrical issue. Here are the most common reasons why outlets stop working, and when it’s time to call a licensed electrician.
Is it just one outlet, or are multiple in the room not working? If several are out, it could be a problem with the circuit — not just a single outlet.
GFCI outlets (the ones with "reset" and "test" buttons) are often found in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor areas. If one trips, it can cut power to multiple outlets downstream.
Tip: Try pressing the reset button on nearby GFCI outlets. If that doesn’t restore power, it may be time to call in a pro.
Sometimes breakers trip without fully flipping off. Try turning the suspected breaker all the way off and then back on.
If this happens often, you may have an overloaded circuit — especially common in older homes in Plano, Lewisville, Carrollton and surrounding DFW suburbs.
If the outlet feels loose or there’s a faint burning smell, stop using it immediately. Damaged wiring can pose a serious fire risk and should only be handled by a licensed electrician.
Outlets wear out over time, especially in high-use areas. If plugs don’t stay in or the outlet feels warm to the touch, it’s likely time for a replacement.
If simple troubleshooting doesn’t restore power — or if you notice any of the following:
…it’s time to contact a professional. Delaying repairs can lead to bigger, more dangerous problems.
