If you're raising young kids in Flower Mound, Lewisville, Southlake, or anywhere in the DFW area, outlet safety might be high on your checklist. But here's something many homeowners don’t realize:
If your home was built after 2008, your outlets may already be childproof.
Thanks to changes in the National Electrical Code (NEC), most modern homes are required to use tamper-resistant (TR) outlets—a built-in safety feature that protects toddlers from inserting foreign objects into sockets.
Let’s walk through what that means, how to tell if your home has them, and where you might still want to add a little extra protection.
Tamper-resistant outlets are standard electrical outlets with an added safety feature: spring-loaded shutters inside the slots. These shutters only open when equal pressure is applied to both the hot and neutral prongs of a plug—just like when plugging in a real appliance.
This helps prevent children from sticking in keys, toys, or fingers, because:
They look almost exactly like regular outlets—so it’s easy not to notice them.
If your home was built in 2010 or later, especially in Flower Mound or surrounding DFW suburbs, it's very likely your outlets are tamper-resistant.
Here's how to check:
Check the faceplate of the outlet. Many TR outlets are stamped with small “TR” letters near the plug slots.
(Use caution.) Try gently inserting just one prong of a plug—not a sharp object. If it doesn’t go in, that’s a sign the shutters are working.
Still unsure? A licensed electrician can check your outlet type during a service call or other project (like a panel inspection or smart home upgrade).
Even in homes with tamper-resistant outlets, there are situations where plastic outlet caps can help:
Downside? Curious toddlers can learn to remove them—and they can pose a choking hazard if left on the floor.
Some outlets get regular use—like those behind:
If the outlet isn’t tamper-resistant and you don’t want to use a cap, the best solution is to have a licensed electrician install a TR outlet in that spot. It’s a quick, affordable upgrade that blends into your wall and protects for the long haul.
